Roof collapse kills 45

MOSCOW: Forty-five persons were killed and 31 injured when the roof of a big indoor market in Moscow collapsed on Thursday. The roof of the Baumansky Market fell onto the stalls shortly after 5 a.m., trapping inside dozens. Though the 2,000 sq m market was open 24 hours, there were few customers. Dozens of ambulances were called to the scene, but rescue work was hampered by a fire that broke out in the rubble. Many are still believed to remain in the crushed building. Mayor Yuri Luzhkov ruled out a terrorist attack and said the concave steel-and-concrete roof collapsed under the weight of heavy wet snow .
