MAPUTO (Mozambique): A powerful earthquake that rocked Mozambique and Zimbabwe early on Thursday morning killed at least two persons and sent thousands of people fleeing into the streets from swaying buildings. The U.S. Geological Survey said the magnitude 7.5 quake had an epicentre 225 km southwest of Mozambique's main port of Beira and struck at 12:19 a.m. (2219 GMT). It shook buildings in Beira, Maputo and the Zimbabwean cities of Masvingo and Mutare. It was also felt in Harare and as far away as Durban on South Africa's Indian Ocean coast. A magnitude 7 quake is capable of widespread and heavy damage, but Mozambican and Zimbabwean authorities said early on Thursday they had few reports of damage. AP
