Rally against Danish cartoons taken out

KADAPA: Muslims sported black badges and took out a protest rally from Jamia Masjid to the MRO office in Rayachoti town on Thursday decrying defamatory cartoons on Prophet Mohammed in a Danish daily. Jamia Masjid president Syed Sharfuddin, secretary Hameed Khan, vice-president Yousuf, former secretary S.Md. Jakriya Basha and coopted ZP member Ali Nawaz Khan, led the rally. The rallyists carried banners and placards condemning US President George Bush and demanding action against the Danish daily which published the cartoons. - Staff Reporter

DCCB co-opts four directors

KADAPA: Kadapa District Cooperative Central Bank co-opted three directors reserved for Scheduled Castes and one of Scheduled Tribes on Thursday. Three SC directorships were filled out of four vacant posts and one ST director was co-opted out of two posts. SCs co-opted as directors were -- Vaddemani Ramanaiah of Rayachoti mandal, Vampana Sudhakar of Obulavaripalle mandal and Redam Nageswara Rao of Pullampet mandal and a lone ST coopted was E. Hanumatha Naik of Chakrayapet mandal. One more director post each reserved for SCs and STs would be filled shortly, according to DCCB Chairman K. Brahmananda Reddy. - Staff Reporter

Woman murdered

KURNOOL: A person identified as Haranath allegedly murdered his wife and surrendered before the police at Sirivel in Kurnool district on Thursday. According to reports, Harinath who suspected the fidelity of his wife Nagalakshmi, slit her throat. - Staff Reporter

Tennis tourney winners

TIRUPATI: Arunkumar Reddy (Tirupati Town Club) won the singles title by beating Suresh (Kurnool) in the 9th Machani Somappa memorial Rayalaseema Tennis Tournament held at Kurnool recently. He also won the doubles title also along with B.V. Muralidhar by defeating Sridhar and Kishore of Kurnool Club. The Kurnool district collector gave away the prizes, a release said.-Staff Reporter

Country-made bombs seized from wine shop

ANANTAPUR: The Chennekothapalli police in the district seized a bucket full of country-made bombs from a wine shop belonging to Congress leader and former Manadal Parishad President Nanji Reddy at Chennekothapalli on Thursday. The police stated that the information about the explosive material was given by Mr. Nanji Reddy himself. He alleged that his political rivals might have kept them in his wine shop to malign him.- Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: A sub-registrar M. Parvathi and her attender M. laxamana Rao of Narsipatnam town of Visakhapatnam were arrested by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) officials on charges of accepting bribes on Thursday. -Special Correspondent

Changes in design of project opposed

HYDERABAD: Farmers of Velugonda project in Prakasam district staged a demonstration here on Thursday demanding execution of the project as per its original design. They participated in a `chalo Assembly' programme under the aegis of Andhra Pradesh Rytu Sangham, affiliated to CPI (M), and later a delegation submitted the memorandum to Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy in the Assembly.

Two drowned

ADILABAD: Sridevi (7) and Panchapula (9) drowned in a water tank on Thursday at Salgupalli in Bejjur mandal when they entered into the water along with the cattle they were grazing.

Miraculous escape for bus passengers

Nellore: Passengers of an RTC bus had a miraculous escape when the vehicle overturned near a diversion at Narayanappapet area of Atmakur mandal of Nellore district, on Wednesday night. The incident occurred on the ghat road, reportedly due to loss of control by the driver.

Women kills son, sets herself ablaze

ADILABAD: Kurma Lakshmi, (28), of Dharmaram village in Laxmanchanda mandal killed her 18-month old son before setting herself ablaze in the wee hours of Thursday. Her four-year-old daughter who was also doused with kersone and set afire could be saved. According to the police, Lakshmi was not behaving normally since some time now and it was suspected that she was possessed by evil spirits. Lakshmi's husband Raji Reddy is employed in the Gulf.-Staff Reporter

Man electrocuted

VIZIANAGARAM: Palla Lakshmu, (45), of Itakarlapalli village in Cheepurupalli mandal was electrocuted when he contacted a live overhead transmission line while pruning branches of a palmairah tree. -Correspondent

Municipality directed to pay compensation

VIZIANAGARAM: The District Consumer Court has directed the Vizianagaram Municipality to pay compensation at the rate of Rs. 50 per month to each student and to each teacher of mandal parishad primary school at Prasantinagar, adjacent to ring road from next month onwards until the garbage near the school was cleared completely by the municipality in addition to paying Rs. 2,500 towards charges to the complainant.

Pseudo naxal killed

KARIMNAGAR: A self-styled organiser of CPI (New Maoist) group was killed an encounter with the police in the outskirts of Gatlanarasingapur village of Saidapur mandal on Thursday. He was identified as M. Kumara Swamy of Dharamaram village of Mulkanoor. - Staff Reporter

Tirumala gears up for Theppotsavam

TIRUMALA: The temple town of Tirumala is being spruced up for the five-day annual Theppotsavam of Lord Venkateswara. The colourful event shall be organised at the temple pushkarini ( holy temple tank ) situated adjacent to the temple complex every day in the evening. Desirous devotees can participate in the festival on payment of Rs.2,500 per day in which five persons shall be allowed.-Staff Reporter
