VELLORE: Voters can apply through form no. 6 for inclusion of names in the electoral rolls even after the publication of the final list on February 27 till the beginning of filing of nominations for the Assembly elections, if their names are left out, Election Commission Secretary K.R. Prasad has said. Mr. Prasad has been deputed by the Commission to oversee the disposal of claims and objections in the constituencies in Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Vellore and Tiruvannamalai districts. Talking to presspersons after overseeing the scrutiny of application forms for inclusion and deletion of names and corrections in respect of eight of the 12 Assembly constituencies in Vellore district at the Collectorate here on Thursday, Mr. Prasad said he was here to see whether the forms had been disposed of as per the guidelines. "I will be giving my observations only to the Election Commission after I reach New Delhi," he said when asked whether he had detected any bogus applications. Mr. Prasad said he checked the work at random in eight to 10 polling stations in each constituency. He said photographing of voters and issue of electors' photo identity cards would go on till the elections were announced so as to cover a maximum number of voters. Asked whether the production of cards would be made mandatory for a voter to exercise franchise, he said unless all voters were covered, it would not be possible to make it mandatory. "However, identification of voters is mandatory. If a voter does not have the card, he or she has to produce any other specified document for identification before casting his or her vote. Efforts are on to cover as many voters as possible ... before the announcement of the elections." Earlier, Mr. Prasad visited the office of the Revenue Divisional Officer at Ranipet and inspected the disposal of claims and objections in respect of the remaining four Assembly constituencies in Vellore district. In the afternoon, he inspected the exercise in respect of the nine constituencies in Tiruvannamalai district.
