SIVAKASI: Seven employees, including five women, were charred to death and 11 others sustained burns in a fire at a private fireworks unit near here on Wednesday evening. The condition of eight others, admitted to the Government Hospital here, is said to be critical. The deceased were identified as I. Karuppaiah (27), D. Deivayanai (40), M. Uma (25), P. Muthamilarasi (24), S. Muthulakshmi (28), S. Mariammal (50) and Parimalam (40). The Deputy Inspector-General of Police, (Madurai Range), Karuna Sagar, inspected the accident spot, said friction while handling explosive materials sparked the fire. The District Collector, A. Mohammed Aslam, the Superintendent of Police, S. Jeyachandran, and the Sivakasi Sub-Collector, Pooja Kulkarni, visited those admitted to the GH.
