Tiruchi: It is, but, usual for the organisers of any function to introduce the chief guest to the audience, by reading out an introductory address listing his achievements. As per protocol, it precedes the chief guest's address. But, it was a different experience for the audience at a national conference sponsored recently by the Department of Environmental Management of the Bharathidasan University. Many speakers, including the Vice-Chancellor, C. Thangamuthu, preferred to introduce the State Department of Environment to the audience, rather than the chief guest, K.S. Neelakantan, its Director. "Many of you may not be aware that there is an exclusive Department of Environment in the State Government," Dr. Thangamuthu said. He even gave the address of the Department in Chennai. Mr. Neelakantan, too, chose to describe his Department's crucial role in various fields including protection of ocean environment, monitoring of treatment of sewage water by the municipal and corporation bodies having underground drainage facility, protection of surface water resources under the national river conservation programme etc.
