Special buses

TIRUCHI: The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (Kumbakonam) Ltd, Tiruchi Region will operate 50 special buses from various places in the district to Omanthur in connection with the `Maha Sivarathri' festival on February 26 and 27.

The buses would be operated from Central bus stand, Chathiram bus stand, Thuraiyur, Musiri and Perambalur to Omanthur, a press release from the Corporation here said.

Mettur level

Tiruchi: The water level at the Mettur dam stood at 112.25 feet on Thursday. The inflow was 1,366 cusecs and the outflow, 1000 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

Road roko

ERODE: Hundreds of women with empty pots conducted a road roko on Thursday at Myladi near Chennimalai. According to police, an overhead water tank was sanctioned to Myladi and funds had been sanctioned for the construction.

But the work had not been taken up.

Demanding immediate action the villagers conducted a road roko.

On assurance from officials that the tank would be built soon the crowd left the place. - Staff Reporter

Two die of diarrhoea

TIRUNELVELI: Two persons, including a six-year old girl, died on Thursday due to diarrhoea.

Kaniyappan,72, and P. Esakki, 6, both from South Kadayam near Tenkasi were the victims. The disease is reportedly spreading at Chettikulam, Alwarkurichi, Thalavaipuram near Royagiri, Mayamaankurichi near Alangulam, Kanakkupillaivalasai near Tenkasi.

Three killed

Tuticorin: Three persons died and two injured when a mini lorry overturned at Thangammalpuram near here on Thursday. M Pitchaikani, 35, M. Arunchunaimuthu, 25, and A Selvakumar, 39, died on the spot. P. Ponraj, 40, and S. Narayanan, 18, were injured.

Man murdered

Tuticorin: Muniyasamy, 27, was murdered by unidentified persons at Puthiamputhur near here on Wednesday. He was attacked with sticks while he was riding a motorcycle with one Mariappan. While Muniyasamy died ofinjuries, Mariappan was admitted to hospital. — Staff Reporter

Four-laning project work launch on March 2

CHENNAI: Work on the Rs.280-crore four-laning project of the national highway from Thanjavur to Tiruchi will be launched on March 2.

To be undertaken on build-operate-transfer mode, the project will cover a distance of about 56 km of the NH-67. Three road over bridges near Thanjavur, Tiruverumbur and Ariyamangalam are coming up under the project, besides a major bridge across Mudhalaimuthuvari river at Vallam. A total of 22 minor bridges, 12 pedestrian underpasses and 12 major junctions form part of the project undertaken by the National Highways Authority of India.

The Union Minister of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, T. R. Baalu, will lay the foundation stone at a function to be held at Vallam. G.K. Vasan and S.S. Palanimanickam, Union Ministers of State, will also participate, according to an official release issued on Thursday. — Special Correspondent

Funds sanctioned for 6 government hospitals

CHENNAI: The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has sanctioned Rs. 9 crore to six government hospitals located on the national highways in Tamil Nadu for capacity building.

An official release issued on Thursday stated that trauma care and emergency facilities would be upgraded at the hospitals, which had been allotted Rs. 1.5 crore each.

Namakkal Government Headquarters hospital, Cuddalore Government Headquarters hospital, Padmanabhapuram Government Headquarters hospital (Kanniyakumari district), Tenkasi Government Headquarters hospital (Tirunelveli district), Melur Government hospital (Madurai district) and Wallajah Government Headquarters hospital (Vellore district) would be covered.

The sanction of the funds has been done on the advice of the Union Health Minister R. Anbumani. The hospitals would purchase two ambulances each and carry out civil and other works relating to electrification, sanitation, communication, equipment and furniture, the release added. — Special Correspondent

Munnoli takes over as Special Judge

BANGALORE: A.T. Munnoli on Thursday took over as Special Judge of the Special Court, Bangalore, trying the disproportionate assets case against the Taml Nadu Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, and four others.

A.S. Pachhapure, who was the first judge of the Special Court, had been transferred last month to the Karnataka High Court as the Registrar General. Though Mr. Munnoli was posted in Mr. Pachhapure's place, he had not taken change since he had not been been relieved.

Mr. Munnoli will be the second judge after Mr. Pachhapure to preside over the disproportionate assets case against Ms. Jayalalithaa and others.

Since the Jayalalithaa trial is stayed by the Supreme Court, Mr. Munnoli will be hearing appeals and revision matters, which will be posted before him from Friday. — Staff Reporter

Dheeran to float new party

CHENNAI: The former president of the Pattali Makkal Katchi, Dheeran, has decided to float a party "Makkal Katchi."

The new party would be launched at a meeting at Koyambedu on Monday, Mr Dheeran said in a statement.

Contending that Tamil Nadu had not been given adequate funds in times of natural disasters, he said the party would strive for greater devolution of financial powers to States. Mr. Dheeran accused the PMK founder S. Ramadoss of promoting his family interests. — Special Correspondent
