HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Lawn Tennis Association will organise the ATP men's championship in October this year, according to APLTA secretary Raja Narasimha Rao. Mr. Rao informed that the event with a prizemoney of $25,000 is the biggest-ever tournament for men to be held in Hyderabad. He also took the opportunity to remind everyone concerned that elections to the APLTA were held as per the rules and regulations in November 2002 and are due again this year-end. "We are going to have elections as scheduled and why should we run away from them having done so much for the sport," he said.
Off to Malaysia
P. Kashyap, one of the most talented young players from Hyderabad on the badminton circuit, has left for Malaysia to train for one month under the watchful guidance of Misbun Sidek, the famous coach who produced many Malaysian stars, including an All-England champion. The trip was made possible at the instance of 2001 All-England champion Pullela Gopichand who used his good offices to influence Yonex group to chip in with some assistance. "Since I felt that he was one of the most promising youngsters I had ever seen from Hyderabad, I thought he badly needed this sort of scientific training," Gopichand said.
Match drawn
Valluvar Nagar and Jawahar Club were locked in a one-all draw in the super league of the Ranga Reddy district football league championship at Valerian Grounds here on Wednesday. After a barren first-half, Antony headed a perfect cross from the right by Chandran to find the target for Valluvar Nagar in the 16th minute. But the team's joy was shortlived as Nityanandan scored a fine solo effort to score the equaliser in the 21st minute.
