Computer training for tsunami-hit families

KOLLAM: Through the Akshaya Project free computer training is being organised for 250 tsunami-hit families of Alapad. A statement from the district office of the Akshaya Project said that the beneficiary contribution for the 250 families is being donated by the Mavelikara-based M.G.M. Sastha Puraskaram for D.M. Kunnathu

Thrissur: D.M. Kunnathu has been selected for the Sree Sastha Puraskaram, instituted by the Arattupuzha Kshetra Samiti, for his services to the Arattupuzha temple. The award, carrying a gold medal and citation, will be presented to him by the Cochin Devaswom Board president M.A. Krishnanunni at a function at Arattupuzha on April 9, according to a press release. — Staff Reporter

Pier collapse: three suspended

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Three persons were suspended on the basis of the preliminary inquiry into the collapse of the piers and barrels of the left bank connection aqueduct of the Karappuzha Irrigation Project. They are K. Surendran, Assistant Executive Engineer, T.B. Chinnan, Assistant Engineer, and K.L. Varghese, Overseer. The mishap, which took place on February 9 when the work was going on, had resulted in the death of one person and injuries to four others. The preliminary inquiry found that the work was being executed in a careless manner and in violation of directions. — Special Correspondent

Reservation for physically challenged

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Three per cent of the posts in the staff/worker categories in public sector undertakings under the State Government have been reserved for physically challenged persons. This reservation (three per cent) is already there in the supervisor/officer categories. — Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: RSP general secretary K. Pankajakshan and State secretary T. J. Chandrachoodan have condoled the death of M. Krishnan Nair. In a statement, Mr. Pankajakshan described Krishnan Nair as a critic who was mercilessly honest in his critical appraisals.— Special Correspondent

Record hundi collection at Guruvayur

THRISSUR: The Guruvayur Sri Krishna temple received a record hundi collection of about Rs.1.93 crores during the last one month. According to Devaswom sources, gold weighing 6.042 kg and silver weighing 23.5 kg were also received as offering during the period. The quantities of both gold and silver received were also record figures. — Staff Reporter

Advisory panel to be constituted soon

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Advisory committee mandated by the Felonious Activities (Prevention) Ordinance will be constituted shortly paving way for the implementation of the law. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy told mediapersons here on Thursday that the President had approved the nomination of three judges of the High Court, M. Ramachandran, Kurian Joseph and P.R. Raman, to the committee. Justice Ramachandran would be the chairman of the panel. The committee is to review the preventive detentions ordered under the provisions of the Ordinance. — Special Correspondent

`No pressure for tie-up with DIC(K)'

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Congress is not under pressure from any UDF partner for striking an alliance with the DIC(K), PCC president Ramesh Chennithala said on Thursday. "No UDF partner has asked the Congress to take the DIC(K) as a constituent in the UDF ahead of the Assembly polls," Mr. Chennithala told reporters here. He was reacting to reports that the IUML was lobbying for bringing back Mr. Karunakaran into the fold. — PTI
