THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The CPI(M) State secretariat on Thursday said the party was united on the decision to keep the Democratic Indira Congress (Karunakaran) out of the LDF. In a statement here, the CPI(M) secretariat said there was no confusion in the party on the issue and all party members would join hands to implement the party decision. It accused the anti-Communist media of trying to create the impression that the party was divided on the issue. The decision to use the break-up in the Congress to the advantage of the working class was taken by the party after discussions at various levels, including the Polit Bureau. The secretariat said the decision to have local-level adjustments with the DIC(K) for the local body elections was also taken collectively. When this decision was carried out, it proved beneficial to both the LDF and the DIC(K). It was not a decision taken by any individual or leader. It was the collective decision of the CPI(M) and the LDF. Appropriate stand would have to be taken depending on the emerging situation. The tactics and political strategy for the Assembly election were also taken on the same premises, it said. The CPI(M) leadership also came down heavily on the UDF leadership's propaganda that the CPI(M) had betrayed the DIC(K) with its decision not to have any truck with it and pointed out that it was quite strange that the persons who said so had only the other day hailed Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and Congress president Sonia Gandhi for having spirited K. Karunakaran out of the Congress. The party has also made a veiled suggestion that the DIC(K) would do well to adopt an independent political stance. It said the people of Kerala were all set to defeat both the UDF and the BJP. Any socially committed movement must adopt an independent stand if it did not agree politically with the UDF and the BJP. The DIC(K) had secured popular approval by its strong positions against the UDF rule and the UDF-BJP tie-up. If the DIC(K) deviated from that position, people's ire would turn against that party as well, the CPI(M) secretariat said.
