TAKING STOCK: District Collector D.V. Raidu inspecting lift irrigation project works at Ummeda in Nandipet mandal on Thursday.
NIZAMABAD: District Collector D.V. Raidu has taken to task the irrigation authorities and contractors of the Argul Rajaram (Gutpa) lift irrigation project for the works are not being carried out congruent with the monthly target given to them. Reviewing the progress of the works at the project site at Ummeda village in Nandipet mandal on Thursday, the Collector directed them that under any circumstances the LI scheme should be made ready to give irrigation water in the coming kharif as the State Government had set the deadline for completion of the project by June. Expressing dissatisfaction at the slow progress in the execution of works, he reminded the authorities and the contractors that they had promised to complete 2.5-km pipeline work in every month from December. However, they failed to keep it up by not completing 7.5 km work in three months as against the total length of 27-km pipeline work. When the Collector commented that the contractors lacked sincerity in their promise the latter held out another promise saying that they would not fail this time.
16 teams engaged
They said they would complete 8 km works this month, 6 km each in March and April and 7 km work in May. Main contractor of the project Salim explained the Collector that he would ensure the completion of his target by engaging 16 teams of workers and staff for pipeline laying, canal digging and welding the pipeline, while Sankar, a representative of another contractor, said 13 teams had been working for the contract accorded to them. With the contractors explaining the Collector that electric polls were coming in the way of their work the latter promised them that he would ask the electricity authorities to visit the site and solve the problem immediately. Project Executive Engineer Narasimha Reddy said that out of the 27-km pipeline work steel pipes sufficient for laying of 16-km line had arrived and another 2,000 pipes required for the rest of 11 km pipeline work were expected to reach soon. Mr. Raidu asked the irrigation authorities to keep him informed about the progress of work.
