AHMEDABAD : The crime branch police investigating the blast at the Ahmedabad railway station believe that the explosive was intended for the Karnavati Express in Mumbai, but it went off 12 hours later on the near-empty platform due to a mistake in setting the timer. Joint Commissioner P.P. Pandey said three persons who had seen the unclaimed briefcase in the SC1 coach luggage rack of the Karnavati Express had kept it behind a soft drink crate on platform number 2, before it went off at 1.43 a.m. While Mr. Pandey refused to disclose the evidence in support of the theory, sources said it was confirmed that a briefcase full of explosives was on the Karnavati express' coach before it left Mumbai Central at 1.40 p.m. on February 18. The intention apparently was to trigger the blast within three minutes of the train leaving Mumbai Central, but the timer device was set for 01.43 hrs instead of 13.43 hours 12 hours later. Mr. Pandey said forensic tests confirmed that at least one kg of RDX was in the briefcase.
