HYDERABAD: A garbage dump is said to have inspired noted filmmaker Sai Paranjpye to shoot `Chakachak'. The idea was to inspire children as the most effective agents of change. And the movie went on to motivate many young citizens to become sentinels of their environment in Pune and Mumbai. In Hyderabad, the gruesome deaths of five children in less than a span of two months spurred andrologist Sudhakar Krishnamurti and his friends to form an organisation, called Citizens for a Better Hyderabad (CBH). Now, taking the example of the `Chakachak' movement, they are trying to ignite a movement to ensure safety for children on the city's streets.
Film screened
The first step was a screening of the movie for over 200 students of the Hyderabad Public School here on Thursday, "to stimulate their thinking", in the words of Kiran Krishnamurti. The movie, which is a comedy, adventure and documentary all rolled into one, tells the story of eight children who find their playground being turned into a dump and decide to clean up their neighbourhood, gradually persuading the adults around them to join the campaign. The movie, she says, will be screened for as many as children as possible, at the maximum number of schools. "All the citizens of Hyderabad are welcome to join the organisation. All they have to do is to log on to our website, www.cbh.in, and register themselves. They can also contact me or my husband, Dr. Sudhakar Krishnamurti, over phone numbers 23402430 and 23416402," she adds.
