CHENNAI: Irked at DMK president Karunanidhi's attitude, the Dalit Panthers of India (DPI) on Thursday appealed to the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) to come out of the Democratic Progressive Alliance (DPA) to lead an "alternative front" in the Assembly elections. "If the PMK stays with the DPA, the DPI will work for the victory of its candidates and refrain from contesting the polls in other places," DPI general secretary Thol. Thirumavalavan told a news conference here. "We will continue to preserve the relationship between the DPI and the PMK." Pointing out that the DPI's main goal was to get "due recognition" from the Election Commission, Mr. Thirumavalavan accused Mr. Karunanidhi of trying to create a rift between the PMK and the DPI by saying that he had no objection to the former allotting some seats from its quota to the latter. "It was unfortunate that Mr. Karunanidhi was undermining the strength of both parties." Is it not a contradiction to refrain from contesting the polls and at the same time seek "due recognition" from the EC? To this question, he would only say that it was the DPI's stand now. Asked whether there was any invitation from the AIADMK, Mr. Thirumavalavan replied in the negative. "Let the invitation come first and then we will consider."
