MANGALORE: Farmers and fishermen will come together to discuss the challenges before them owing to the impact of globalisation and to chalk out a programme to face them effectively. A meeting has been convened by the School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, and Karnataka Coastal Fishermen's Action Committee here on Saturday for the purpose. Exploitation by middlemen is the most common problem faced by farmers and fishermen. As a result, farmers and fishermen are not getting a proper price for their produce. This has landed many families in debt, conveners Rita Noronha, Sunny D'Souza and Vasudeva Bolur, said in a release. They said the price of farm equipment and equipment used by fishermen is increasing. Environmental pollution has affected their produce. Owing to marine pollution, fishermen are apprehensive that many species of fish face extinction. The soil in the coastal belt is losing its fertility owing to environmental factors. The cultivation of paddy and other food crops has considerably declined in the district in recent years. Proper medical facilities also remains beyond the reach of many families. All these issues will be discussed at the meet, they said.
