MANGALORE: The Vittla police seized a vehicle smuggling 8,000 sachets of illicit arrack into Kerala on Tuesday and raided an unauthorised arrack-manufacturing unit at Karavapadi village in Bantwal taluk, a press release from B. Dayananda, Superintendent of Police, here said. Police personnel noticed a vehicle on the Kanyana-Manjeshwara Road speeding towards Kerala and directed the driver to stop. When the driver did not do so, the police chased the vehicle. The driver lost control of the vehicle, which tumbled into a ditch. The driver, Mohan, was injured in the process. On searching the vehicle, police found the arrack sachets packed in 16 polythene sacks. On questioning, Mohan disclosed that it was brewed at a house in Karavapadi. The police immediately raided the house and seized a sachet-manufacturing machine, 4,000 sachets of arrack, 350 litres of spirit and other raw material. The house reportedly belongs to Alphonse Ligoury D'Souza of Karvapadi. The Vittla police have registered two cases, one against Mohan and the other against Alphonse Ligoury D'Souza and some others, under the Karnataka Excise Act.
