Committee to submit report on industrial policy shortly

Staff Correspondent

The report was to have been submitted this month-end

  • The core committee was constituted to advise the Government on the new industrial policy
  • Industrialists urged to come forward with their problems

MANGALORE: The core committee constituted by the State Government to advise it on the broad contours of the new industrial policy for 2006-2011 will submit its report to the Government in about three or four weeks, committee Chairman P.P. Prabhu said here on Wednesday.

Speaking to presspersons on the sidelines of an interactive meet with members of the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), he said that the committee has already held interactions with representatives of chambers of commerce and industry in Bangalore and Mysore.

It will also hold interactions with members of chambers of commerce and industry in Hubli and Gulbarga shortly. He said the committee was to have submitted its report by this month-end. However, owing to several reasons it has been delayed.

Addressing members of trade bodies, Mr. Prabhu, who was formerly Union Commerce Secretary, said the implementation of policy measures is important, and urged industrialists to come forward with their problems.

A member suggested that the Government do away with investment subsidy while formulating the new policy, as the subsidy does not reach industrialists on time.

The authorities of the Kanara Small Industries Association (KSIA) and KCCI suggested that the Mangalore Electricity Supply Company (MESCOM) open a service centre at the Baikampady industrial area.

They said that no MESCOM official is available to address their problems during the night.

M.R. Narayana, professor of economics, Institute for Social and Economic Change, Bangalore, and member of the committee, also interacted with KCCI members. KCCI president A. Srinivasa Rao submitted a memorandum to Mr. Prabhu, which contained suggestions from the KCCI on framing the policy.

KCCI honorary secretary M. Padmanabha Kamath proposed a vote of thanks.
