BANGALORE: The waste-to-energy plant at Mandur near Hoskote will be ready to take about 1,000 tonnes of the city's 2,200 tonnes of daily garbage from August.

After completion, the plant, work on which is under progress, will be able to generate 8 MW of power. Mayor Mumtaz Begum, who inspected work on the project on Wednesday, asked Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) officials to ensure that the plant becomes operational in three months.

The BMP has entrusted the project to set up a scientific landfill, a processing plant and a power plant to Srinivasa Gayatri Resource Recovery Ltd. (SGRRL) on a "build-operate-transfer" basis for 33 years. Of the 135 acres of land allotted by the State Government for landfill, the facility to process waste and generate power out of it is coming up on 25 acres.

The BMP will get a 2 per cent equity share in the project by the company as per the agreement signed.

This will enable the BMP to purchase power produced at the plant at a later date, which can be used for streetlights.

Deputy Mayor M. Lakshminarayana, Leader of Opposition B.R. Nanjundappa, Chairman of the Standing Committee on Health M. Muniraju and senior BMP officials accompanied the Mayor.
