KOCHI: A Syndicate sub-committee of the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) has found lapses on the part of a section of the faculty members of the School of Industrial Fisheries in connection with the drowning of a student in the Chalakudy river. Joseph John, a student of School of Industrial Fisheries, drowned while collecting fish from the river. The Syndicate committee that probed the incidents that led to the death of Joseph John found that faculty members and research scholars included in the committee for collecting fish had failed to accompany students who visited the river. Student organisations on the campus had went on a strike demanding action against B. Madhusoodana Kurup, Reader, School of Industrial Fisheries, Cochin University of Science and Technology, in connection with the death of Joseph John. Students of the school had alleged that Dr. Kurup had harassed them in the name of internal assessment. The Syndicate sub-committee headed by Lopez Mathew found that Dr. Kurup had prior information about the visit of students. But they found no supporting evidence in this regard. In its report to be submitted before the Syndicate on Saturday, the committee will recommend that faculty members should accompany students deputed for collection of fish from select sites in the State. Security of students should be given top priority during such visits. The committee also suggested that research scholars should not be involved in the process of internal assessment of students.
