KOCHI: The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has included the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) among seven educational institutions in the country to be upgraded with facilities similar to those in the IITs. Announcing this after a meeting held in New Delhi on Thursday, P.K. Abdul Azis, Vice-Chancellor, CUSAT, told The Hindu that the university would receive financial assistance ranging from Rs.700-1,200 crores for the upgrade during the next six years. The funding will start from April. A tripartite agreement involving the MHRD, Government of Kerala and CUSAT will be signed soon. The CUSAT will submit an action plan explaining the academic reforms that would be initiated on the campus during the next six years. A meeting will be held in New Delhi on March 2 to finalise the action plan. Dr. Azis said all institutions selected for upgrade would retain their current names. Besides CUSAT, the other institutions identified by the S.K. Joshi committee for upgradation include the Institute of Technology, Benares Hindu University (IT-BHU), Uttar Pradesh; University College of Engineering and College of Technology, Osmania University, Hyderabad; Bengal Engineering College, Howrah; Jadavpur University's Engineering and Technology Departments, West Bengal; Zakir Hussain College of Engineering and Technology, Aligarh Muslim University, and Andhra University College of Engineering, Vishakhapatnam.
