KOCHI: Replacing GI (galvanised iron) water pipelines with PVC pipes, preparing a project report to tap a water source at Vennalapara, free drinking water connections for the poor and setting up of biogas plants to process bio-waste were some of the draft project proposals that came up for consideration at a development seminar organised by the city corporation here on Wednesday. The seminar was held to identify projects to be implemented in the next financial year using the Plan fund of the civic body. Protecting coastal zones by planting mangroves, introducing eco-friendly bags in place of plastic ones, setting up of pay-and-use toilets at main city centres and religious places and planting of saplings along roads were also considered. Among proposals for poverty alleviation, issue of title deeds for people residing in puramboke land and housing projects for the poor were included. Providing water connections to houses with fewer than five consumers, completion of HUDCO and DFID projects and setting up of rainwater harvesting projects were among the proposals for drinking water supply. Preventing encroachments along major canals, construction of protective walls and deepening of canals formed part of the proposals to prevent water-logging in the city. Development of Sahodaran Ayyappan Road, Subhash Chandra Bose Road, K.J. Herschel Road and others and a flyover connecting Panampilly Nagar and Fine Arts Hall Road were proposed. Development of water transport in the city, reconstruction of a few bridges and development of bund roads found mention in the proposals. An awareness campaign against use of pan masala and drugs among schoolchildren, developing school libraries and setting up toilets in schools were proposed. Mayor Mercy Williams and Deputy Mayor C.K. Manisankar were among those who led the discussions. The working groups for various sectors will screen the proposals, which can be implemented using the Plan fund. The corporation council will fix the priority of projects, Mr. Manisankar said. The list of selected projects will be submitted to the District Planning Committee on February 27 and the committee will consider the proposals at its meeting on March 6, he said.
