KOCHI: The District Animal Husbandry Department on Thursday collected serum and excreta of birds from Mangalavanam and sent it for testing to the laboratory in Bhopal. The team led by veterinary surgeon Lisa Maria Mathew, Deputy Director of the Department, led the team in collecting the samples from the mangroves where migratory birds visit every year. The department would get the results in three-four days, Dr. Mathew said. The samples have been collected from here on the assumption that if there is any bird flu, spread by the migratory birds, those endemic to Mangalavanam would be affected. Veterinary surgeons T. Giggin and Eldose assisted Dr. Mathew in the process. "We have been doing a regular check up at Mangalavanam since September last when the bird flu had been reported elsewhere in the world. Since there are reports from within the country, we are more alert," Dr. Mathew said. A taluk-level monitoring committee has been formed to check the incidence of bird flu in the whole district, she said. Awareness classes will be held at all veterinary hospitals and all Government and private chicken farms as part of stepping up the campaign against the disease.
