Thiruvananthapuram: The rural police have arrested five members of a migrant group in connection with a series of dacoities in the district. Circle Inspector, Kazhakkuttom, Muhammad Iqbal identified the accused as Mikhail, Muthu, Yasaki, Pandyan and Murugan. The CI said the accused were responsible for five dacoities in the rural police limits. The gang was arrested as part of an anti-dacoity operation initiated by SP, Rural, P. Gopinath. The gang members used their skills in catching snakes, rats and other pests to gain access to houses during the day. The police said the gang burgled these houses at night and sold their loot, mostly gold ornaments, to certain goldsmiths in Paravoor and Vizhinjam. The gang members hail from Tirunelveli district in Tamil Nadu. They were produced before the court and remanded to 14 days in judicial custody.
Stabbed to death
A 35-year-old man was stabbed to death by unidentified persons near Idinjar, in Palode police station limits. The police identified the deceased as Sasindran, a labourer. The body has been kept in the mortuary of Medical College Hospital for the post-mortem examination.
Rigorous imprisonment
The Additional Sessions Judge Fast Track Court III on Thursday sentenced Biju, alias Rajesh, a resident of Cheruvakkal, to seven years' rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs.20,000 after he was found guilty of severing the right foot of an autorickshaw driver in August 2000. Public Prosecutor S.R. Jayakumar and advocates V.V. Rajesh, S.J. Jayaram and Deepu V appeared on behalf of the prosecution.
