Bangalore: The former Bangalore Development Authority Chairman K.K. Murthy has welcomed Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy's assertion that the Government is committed to the metro rail project for Bangalore. In a statement, Mr. Murthy, who is a member of the All-India Congress Committee, said the project has been welcomed by all right-thinking citizens who are worried about Bangalore's traffic congestion and crumbling infrastructure. "I congratulate the young Chief Minister on ending the uncertainty gripping such a vital project for the past year. Juxtaposed with the hostile stance of his father and former Prime Minister, H.D. Deve Gowda, which pushed the project into a mire of unnecessary controversy, Mr. Kumaraswamy's unequivocal support is certainly an act of foresight and a step in the right direction in tackling the innumerable problems defying solution and damaging the image of Bangalore," he said. Mr. Murthy who envisaged a metro rail project for Bangalore when he was heading the BDA (1981-82) said that even then the deteriorating infrastructure was a cause for concern and remedial steps were initiated. However, the huge growth in population had belied the projections of planners. The stance of the previous Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, who worked for the implementation of the metro rail project, should be appreciated.
