A decathlon to help bring out the true meaning of yoga

PONDICHERRY: The Pondicherry Yoga Asana Association recently organised `Yoga Decathlon', a competition that tests the skills and understanding in 10 yoga-based events.

As many as 100 contestants in the age of 6-25 took part in the 6th Annual Swami Gitananda Best Child and Best Youth Competitions held recently under the auspices of the Pondicherry Yogasana Association (PYA).

According to a press release from Ananda Balayogi Bhavanani, competitions included elocution, drawing, painting, yogasana, quiz — oral and written, designing, team asanas, dumb charades and fancy dress, all on yoga.

The fancy dress competition saw children dressed up as a lotus, a yoga robot and even a tree that represented the Trigunas.

The elocution contest saw youngsters speak on subjects such as Pancha Klesha, obstacles to yoga, ups and downs of yoga sadhana and the role of guru in yoga.

Awarded

The Best Child Awards for participants in the under 10 category and under 14 group were won by T. Mrithika and R.V. Krithiga, students of St. Joseph's of Cluny. Reena Joseph, a student of Pope John Paul II College of Education, won the Best Youth Award.

Education Secretary B.V. Selvaraj presented the awards to the winners at a function held recently. Ananda Balayogi Bhavanani, general secretary, PYA, presented the title `Kavi Yoga Shironmani' to Mr. Selvaraj on the occasion.

Meenakshi Devi Bhavanani, president, PYA, said, "The word `yoga' has come to mean exactly what each person chooses it to mean, nothing more and nothing less. The aim of this competition is to help the youth to understand, explain and express the true meaning of yoga as a way of life, as well as a spiritual path to self-actualization and self-realization."
