Awareness tour on saving mangroves

Brings to focus the importance of mangroves in conserving the ecosystem

KOZHIKODE: In a rare endeavour, scores of students from city schools and colleges participated in a study tour organised by the Kandal Samrakshana Samiti here on Friday, as part of an awareness initiative on the need to protect what remained of the mangrove vegetation in Kozhikode city.

The Kandal Samrakshana Samiti is represented by 18 environmental organisations. The initiative focussed on the importance of mangroves in conserving the ecosystem, and the urgency to conserve the vegetation for the future.

Environmentalist who accompanied the students informed them of the widespread destruction of mangroves, and the detrimental impact it would have on the environment.

The efficacy of wetlands was highlighted too, and how their degradation can cause water scarcity and flood threats.

The study tour was conducted as a prelude to pressure the State Government to initiate urgent action so that the Kotuli Wetland Project sanctioned by the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India can be implemented without delay, convener of the study tour T.Sobeendran said.

A memorandum will be presented to Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and other Ministers highlighting the immediate need to issue an ordinance in this regard before the expiry of term of the present ministry.
