Dharmapuri: Collector M. Chandrasekaran has asked villagers to extend ample support in the movement to eradicate female infanticide. According to him, the practice of killing the infant or abandoning it at the Cradle Baby Centre was `unfortunate'. The Government had come with various welfare measures to protect girl children. Along with this, families having a girl child were also provided with various sops. The social evil could be completely eradicated only with the cooperation of the villagers, he said. He was addressing the participants at a mass contact programme at Hanumanthapuram village in Palacode taluk on Thursday.
Identity cards
A total of 2,84,00 identity cards were distributed under the Farmers Security Scheme to farmers in Dharmapuri district. Farmers who had not received the cards could apply with the Village Administrative Offices concerned. Under the scheme, old age pension would be provided to all beneficiaries who completed 65 years of age. The Collector received 200 petitions and he instructed the department officials concerned to take action on them based on their importance. The Collector also distributed sericulture implements to three persons, housesite pattas to 51 persons and welfare assistance to the tune of Rs.11 lakhs to 116 beneficiaries during the programme. Project Officer, DRDA, P.M. Chandrahaasan attended.
