VIJAYAWADA: City Mayor Tadi Sakunthala on Friday underlined the need for promoting ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine, by setting up clinics in rural areas and creating awareness among people.

She inaugurated `Ayushvedika-2006,' a three-day exhibition organised jointly by the department of Ayush - ayurveda, unani, siddha and homoeopathy -- and the State council of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) at Sri Sesha Sai Kalyana Mandapam here.

Ms. Sakunthala said that poor patients were not consulting doctors, but taking medicines given by chemists at medical shops.

Since allopathic treatment had become costlier, ayurveda should be promoted, she said.

Mayor's advise

Lauding the efforts of the organisers for conducting the exhibition, she observed that many companies, manufacturing ayurvedic drugs, were adopting new techniques in making and promoting their products.

"Efforts are on to prepare drugs to fight diseases like AIDS," she said.

She advised medicine students and doctors to visit the exhibition.

Commissioner of the department of Ayush D.R. Garg recalled that the department had conducted `Arogya-2005', an exhibition of ayurvedic products in Hyderabad last year. "With over five lakh people visiting the exhibition, we have decided to conduct similar exhibitions in major cities," he said.

The department, in association with the FICCI, would conduct ayurveda exhibitions in Visakhapatnam and Tirupati soon.

Mr. Garg said that the department had several plans to promote ayurveda across the State and decided to create awareness among the present generation about this system.

Head of the FICCI State Council K.S. Ganesan said that as part of promoting trade and industry, the FICCI was sponsoring the exhibitions being conducted by the department of Ayush.

The exhibition will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. till February 26.
