CHENNAI: A departmental enquiry has been initiated against the Coimbatore railway station manager, who was relieved of Rs. 4 lakhs by a person last week. Pending enquiry, James has been transferred, according to the Southern Railway General Manager Thomas Varghese. In a press release, Mr. Varghese said on last Saturday, a phone call was received by Mr. James purportedly from the General Manager's office, asking him to pay Rs. 4 lakhs to an outsider. The Station Manager without verifying the authenticity of the caller handed over the money to him. Only later did he realise that he had been duped by the stranger. The General Manager said that there were clear instructions that government transactions could be done only with proper documentation and based on Government orders with proper authenticity. Despite this, the station manager concerned allowed himself to be "conned" by the outsider. Mr. Varghese said strict instructions had been issued to all divisional railway managers to ensure that such things did not recur. They had been asked to advise their subordinates to cross verify in writing before taking any action on issues such as these. The Coimbatore Police have registered a case and the Police Commissioner had personally taken up the investigation.
