VIJAYAWADA: As a sequel to a story published in these columns under `At The Crossroads', officials of Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) launched a drive to clear traffic obstructions and encroachments by shopkeepers at Kaleswararaopet Market on Friday. Those occupying considerable space on the roads in front their shops were warned against continuing the practice and were asked to facilitate free movement of traffic in the busy market area. In a surprise inspection, Commissioner of VMC Natarajan Gulzar took serious note of vegetable vendors occupying parts of roads. The owners were not restricting themselves to doing business from within the shops allotted to them at the Kaleswararao Market Complex. The traffic obstructions created by the shopkeepers was causing problems to pedestrians and vehicular traffic also. Mr. Gulzar also visited the telephone exchange area and another place in One Town. He directed the officials to remove the shops that came up in encroachments in the side drains. Later, he visited several areas in 13th division. Local corporator Koganti Vimala Kumari was present. At Fakirgudem, local people told the Commissioner that they were suffering due to lack of underground drainage.
