Goverdhan Mehta not going to U.S.

Staff Reporter

Bangalore: Goverdhan Mehta, former Director of IISc. , who was initially denied a visa to go to the U.S. and later granted one, has said that he will not be going to the U.S. this time.

"Once the U.S. Consulate officials refused me a visa, I called the hosts, the University of Florida who had invited me to give a guest lecture, and cancelled my programme. I would have had to fly to the U.S. on Friday night had I been issued the visa on February 10," he told The Hindu. Asked how he felt about the support from the scientific community, Prof. Mehta said he was overwhelmed by it.

"These are things over which we have no control. The U.S. Ambassador to India called me and was very apologetic," he said.

However, Prof. Mehta did not wish to comment when asked if the U.S. State Department had granted him the visa to avoid any embarrassment, as President George W. Bush is scheduled to visit India soon.
