TIRUNELVELI: The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), which declared this year as `Year of Students' Participation in Quality Assurance', has proposed to involve students in academic activities of colleges and universities, including designing of curriculum. "We want to move with time. Since the present day's students have greater knowledge and astonishing exposure, thanks to the growth and accessibility to information technology, the NAAC believes that students, who form nucleus of the teaching-learning process, can play an active role in ensuring quality of education being offered by any institution of higher education," said Jagannath Patil, co-ordinator of the NAAC Peer Team, which visited St. Xavier's College, Palayamkottai. The NAAC will encourage the colleges and universities to work in this direction, he noted. Speaking to reporters here on Thursday, Mr. Patil said the autonomous colleges, which had been empowered to design their own syllabi for various departments, should ensure the active participation of the students in this exercise besides utilising their knowledge in other academic activities also while the universities make use of the expertise of its alumni and other experts drawn from industrial sector. As part of this refreshing aspect, workshops, seminars and conferences in more numbers should be conducted in the colleges and universities to fine-tune the skills of the students, he felt.
