Belgaum: Badminton legend Prakash Padukone inaugurated a new badminton court of the Belgaum District Badminton Association at Mahabaleshwar Nagar at a simple function here on Friday evening. Those present on the occasion included BDBA chief patron and Commissioner of Bangalore Mahanagara Palike K. Jyotiramlingam, Karnataka State Badminton Association President Vikram Karan, industrialist Prasanna V. Ghotge, BDBA Secretary Ashok Patil and Uma Shetty, who was ranked third' among the women badminton players in the country. Mr. Padukone called upon young sportsmen to strive for excellence in sports and games. According to Mr.Patil, the inauguration of the court marks completion of first phase of the project. Of the Rs.90 lakhs estimated as the total cost of the project, Rs.40 lakhs had been spent on construction of the court. The work on other second phase, which includes construction of gymnasium and billiards parlour will be taken up soon. A sum of Rs. 45 lakhs is required to complete the works to be taken under second phase, he said. He said regular coaching camps will be organised at the new court, while tournaments will be organised in other courts having adequate space to accommodate audience. A state-ranking tournament will be organised in July and steps will be taken to organise bigger events in near future, he added.
