PONDICHERRY: There are various gaps that have to be filled in the rehabilitation of tsunami affected villagers, according to Cuddalore Collector Gagandeep Singh Bedi. Inaugurating a workshop on tsunami organised by terre des homes, a Germany-based non-governmental organisation here on Saturday, the Collector said the Government and NGOs had to work jointly to see that temporary shelters and the sanitation in the dwelling units maintained properly.
Take time
It would take a few more months for the Government to complete the permanent rehabilitation process. Till that time the shelters and the sanitation should be looked after properly. "NGOs which have put up the temporary shelters have to address the issue. The administration will give all support." He also called upon the NGOs to see that the permanent houses they built for the fishermen were properly utilised. "You have to see that the beneficiaries continued to enjoy the benefits. There are instances where certain extraneous groups trying to grab the benefits." The NGOs could also help the fishermen inculcate the habit of good sanitation. He urged the NGOs to participate in the shelterbelt plantation in the coastal areas. The fishermen in Cuddalore district had been demanding setting up of high mast lights and provision of wireless sets for use during deep sea fishing. The NGOs could play a role in fulfilling these demands, he suggested. Also, they could join the efforts of the Government in training the fishermen in alternative livelihood means.
