APPLYING LANGUAGE: The team from Andal Azhagar College of Engineering receives Rs. 25,000 for a project on Tamil handwriting recognition from R. Bhaskaran, Special Secretary, Labour and Employment. K.S. Babai of Meenakshi Engeering College and V. Sankaranarayanan, Director, Tamil Virtual University, look on.

CHENNAI: More than 250 students from across the State learnt about the increasing opportunities in Tamil computing at a workshop organised by the Tamil Virtual University and Kanithamizh Sangam here on Saturday.

"The job opportunities in language applications will be several thousands in two years," said R. Guhan, country manager, jobsdb.com. A foundation in Tamil, accounts, technical writing and software could be the skill sets employers would be looking for, he said.

This is heartening news for student teams participating in Kaniyam, which Kanithamizh Sangam and Anna University have been organising since 2003. Kaniyam facilitated several meetings with students, discussions on technical feasibility and gives cash prizes for innovative projects.

Ilamkumaran, Senthil Anand and Shankar of Sri Andal Azhagar Engineering College, Chengalpattu, won Rs 25,000 for creating `Ezhuthaani,' which is a hardware and motion-based software for handwriting recognition. It converts writing directly into a soft copy and a font, said Ilamkumaran. The workshop had sessions on Tamil fonts, encoding, tools and technologies. V. Sankaranarayanan, Director, Tamil Virtual University and R. Bhaskaran, Special Secretary, Labour and Employment, participated.
