BELLARY: C. Ashwath, singer, has urged critics to document well-known compositions/works in "sugama sangeeta" to popularise this form of music. "There are many sugama sangeeta compositions that have not been analysed. If analysed, it will help in identifying the class of works, and could be considered their inclusion in the curriculum to be taught," he said at the fourth State-level "Sugama Sangeeta" conference at the Basava Bhavan here on Saturday. M.P. Prakash, former Deputy Chief Minister, inaugurated the conference organised by the Karnataka Sugama Sangeeta Parishat. Siddalingaiah, writer, presided over the function. Mr. Ashwath wanted the parishat to take initiative in this regard, besides taking steps to bring out audiocassettes on new compositions by giving an opportunity to new singers. Stressing the importance of group singing, he urged the parishat to train those interested in it. Schoolchildren should be trained in singing patriotic songs and "nadageete" in groups, he said. He said there are several poems that could be composed and brought out in audiocassettes. Mr. Prakash said such conferences will help provide an opportunity to local talent to listen to great poets, singers, composers and musicians from different parts of the State. Besides, they will kindle a desire among budding artistes to become good singers. He expressed concern over the diminishing interest among the people in making use of the facilities provided to promote cultural activities. He referred to the cultural complex here in this regard. G.S. Shivarudrappa, writer, honoured Mr. Ashwath and H.R. Leelavati, chairperson of the previous conference. Y.K. Muddukrishna, parishat President, welcomed the gathering. Chornur Kotrappa, district convenor, proposed a vote of thanks. Young artistes from Bellary and Hospet, who underwent training organised by the parishat, recited "naadageete." Several artistes participated in the "geeta chilume" programme. Mr. Ashwath, Mr. Prakash and Ms. Leelavati were taken out in a procession from the Gandhi Bhavan to the Basava Bhavan.
