Mandal-level official teams to tour every habitation to identify works

  • Each mandal divided into three clusters for holding gram sabhas
  • Works identified will be sent to mandal parishads for approval

ANANTAPUR: Gram sabhas for identification of works to be taken up under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) will be conducted in every habitation from February 27. They will continue till March 15.

Talking to newspersons here on Saturday, Chairperson of Zilla Parishad G. Thippeswamy said that each mandal was divided into three clusters for the purpose of conducting gram sabhas and three mandal-level official teams would hold gram sabhas in every habitation to identify works.

    75 works

There were some 75 works specified under water conservation and water harvesting, drought proofing including afforestation and tree plantation, irrigation canals including micro and minor irrigation works, provision of irrigation facilities to SC and ST beneficiaries, renovation of traditional water bodies including desiltation of tanks, land development, flood control and protection works including drainage in water logged areas, rural connectivity to provide all weather access and others to be taken up under NREGS.

The team would be provided with vehicles for visiting the habitations. The works identified would be sent to mandal parishads for approval. While 75 per cent of works would be finalised by the gram panchayat itself, 15 per cent would be finalised by the mandal parishad and the remaining 10 per cent by the zilla parishad. There was no upper limit on the cost of works to be taken up under the scheme, Mr. Thippeswamy said.

Even formation of new tanks with an estimated cost up to Rs. 40 lakhs could be taken up under the scheme. However, machinery would not be used in the execution of the work.

    Staff appointed

About 30 persons would be appointed in each mandal for implementation of the scheme, the ZP Chairperson said. A computer operator and an accountant were already appointed in each mandal for the scheme work. Technical and field assistants would also be appointed soon.

Some 4 lakh families had already applied for the job cards and the issuance of the cards would commence from March 1.
