Jammikunta marketyard does roaring business

4 lakh quintals of cotton procured from ryots till date


  • It is one of the biggest marketyards in north Telangana
  • Traders from Guntur, Maharashtra arrive at Jammikunata
  • The market has earned a revenue of Rs. 85.13 lakhs during this year
  • Cold storage plant to be set up in the yard

    KARIMNAGAR: The Jammikunta agricultural marketyard, one of the biggest marketyards of north Telangana region, has done a whopping business of Rs. 25 crores by procuring cotton, maize and paddy produce from farmers during this season.

    A record number of 4 lakh quintals of cotton was procured from the farmers till date and the market authorities are further expecting arrivals of another 1.5 lakh quintals of cotton till March end. Incidentally, the Cotton Corporation of India had procured only a minimum of 10,000 quintals of cotton by providing a minimum support price of Rs. 1,926 to Rs. 2,056 per quintal.

    Abuzz with activity

    While traders have procured a total of 3.59 lakh quintals of cotton by providing a MSP of Rs 2400 to Rs 2,700 per quintal. Traders from Maharashtra and Guntur district have also arrived at Jammikunta to procure the cotton.

    The market had earned a revenue of Rs. 85.13 lakhs during this year by procuring cotton alone which is a record during the last five years period. During the year 2004-05, the market earned a revenue of Rs. 80.45 lakhs in the cotton procurement, in 2003-04 (Rs 58.43 lakhs) and 2002-03 (Rs 71.65 lakhs).

    Big plans

    The Jammikunta agriculture market has also procured about 21,42,856 quintals of maize from the farmers by providing the MSP and does a business of Rs 9.26 crore. About 1.48 lakh quintals of paddy was also procured in the market.

    Market committee chairman T. Sammi Reddy attributed the record business due to the timely intervention by the higher authorities and close coordination with traders. He said they were planning to set up a cold storage at the marketyard soon. They were also contemplating to procure chillies from farmers with the help of Markfed from the next season.
