Maoists attack security post in Nepal, one killed
Kathmandu:
Maoist rebels attacked a security checkpoint near an airport in Nepalgunj, western Nepal, on Saturday, triggering an hour-long gunbattle that left at least one person dead, officials said.
But it was not clear if the victim was a civilian or a rebel, officials in the town said.
Nepalgunj, where the rebels have a large presence, is the regional headquarter for western Nepal, and is also home to the regional police and army command centres.
The rebels have intensified attacks since January 2, when they ended a four-month unilateral ceasefire.
The group said they halted the ceasefire because the government failed to reciprocate. AP
