KOCHI: The INS Venduruthy `A' team won the boat pulling regatta organised by the Southern Naval Command on Saturday. INS Dronacharya was declared the runners-up. Rear Admiral Rajendar Singh, Chief of Staff, Southern Naval Command, was the chief guest at the annual sporting event. The regatta was held in the Ernakulam Channel and six teams comprising personnel from different Naval units participated. Races were held in six categories. Each team had a crew of six, including a helmsman. It was a display of grit and endurance as the teams pulled away on 27-feet boats called `Whalers' to win the regatta trophy traditionally called `Cock'. The regatta was flagged off at the Venduruthy Bridge. The race was held over a distance of 1.7-km. The Godavari Trophy for being the overall first in sports during 2005 was won by the Venduruthy team. The INS Dronacharya team won the trophy for the Best Spirited Team.
