A watershed

The conviction in the Best Bakery case of nine persons to life imprisonment is a watershed. It clearly sets a precedent for rule of law in cases of suspected state-sponsored communal riots. The apex court and the relentless efforts of social activist Teesta Setalvad, supported by progressive sections of civil society, are to be commended.

Kasim Sait,
Chennai

The judiciary and social activists have successfully overcome the Gujarat Government's long shadow and upheld the prestige of India.

The verdict is a small step in dispensing justice to the victims of the Gujarat pogrom.

There are many similar cases in which people have been intimidated into silence.

Vijay Veerla,
London

The verdict symbolises the victory of truth. It is also a strong signal to the forces that try to subvert justice and bury the truth.

P.T. Abraham,
Kochi, Kerala

The Supreme Court did well to order a retrial outside Gujarat. One cannot help feeling that had a retrial of the accused in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case been ordered outside Delhi, the victims might have got justice.

Satbir Singh Bedi,
New Delhi
