KOCHI: The Indian Coast Guard and police escorted SAF Marine Pakistan, a German merchant vessel, to Kochi on Sunday. The container vessel was detained by the Lakshadweep Police four days ago. Four of its crew members a German, a Russian and two Filipinos were arrested after they were found wandering about in an uninhabited island near Kavaratti without permission. The Coast Guard was informed and they took control of the vessel. The crew members were remanded to judicial custody. Sleuths of the Intelligence Bureau and Police, the Coast Guard and the Customs Department personnel are jointly interrogating the crew members, Coast Guard sources said. The vessel was en route from Salala to Tuticorin when it dropped anchor near the uninhabited island. Other crew members are still in the vessel, which was brought to Kochi and berthed in the Ernakulam Wharf at 2.30 p.m. on Sunday. Customs Department personnel will inspect the 200-odd containers in the ship. The exporters and importers of the cargo in the containers have been contacted, sources said.
