VISAKHAPATNAM: Chennai rallied from a first-half deficit to beat Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) and retain the all-India major ports kabaddi championship at the Port Stadium on Sunday. Chennai trailed 11-15 at half-time but finished the match at 43-17. Last year's runner-up, Visakhapatnam, plagued by injuries, finished third beating Mumbai 24-15 (15-11). The host lost to Mumbai in the league phase but managed to take third place. S. Rajaseelan of Chennai won a double in the carrom event, claiming the men's singles and doubles titles. It was also a clean sweep by Chennai in the event as it won the team championship on Saturday and annexed the veterans singles title through A. Rajendran on Sunday. Amit Mukherjee of Kolkata completed a double in the table tennis tournament. Amit and Soumic De Sarkar won the doubles final and figured in the singles final held late in the evening. Amit Mukherjee prevailed over Sarkar in seven games. D. Suren of Visakhapatnam retained the table tennis veterans singles title and also helped the team to claim the runner-up spot in the men's doubles competition along with G.V.S. Rama Rao. Visakhapatnam Port Trust deputy chairman M.S. Rao was the chief guest at the valedictory function. VPT chairman K. Ratna Kishore's wife Mrs. K. Durga distributed the prizes. The results: Kabaddi: Final: Chennai bt JNPT 43-17 (11-15). Semifinals: Chennai bt Visakhapatnam 54-26 (42-15); JNPT bt Mumbai 28-15 (8-8).
