KOZHIKODE: Awards of the Calicut Commissionerate of Central Excise and Customs for top taxpayers for the financial year were distributed at a function held to mark Central Excise Day celebrations at YMCA International Cultural Complex on Friday. B. Syed Mohammed, Commissioner, distributed Commissionerate's awards. The Commissionerate in Kozhikode has jurisdiction over seven districts in Kerala, from Thrissur to Kasaragod, besides Mahe in Pondicherry and Lakshadweep. Mr. Mohammed said during the period April - 2005 to January-2006, the Commissionerate had collected Rs.403.34 crores in Central excise, Rs 90.67 crores in service tax and Rs.38.71 lakhs in customs duty. Arrears were also collected from defaulters of Central excise duty and service tax. He said the Customs Intelligence unit attached to the Commissionerate had launched a crackdown on ganja cultivation. The department officials destroyed 21,000 fully-grown ganja plants valued at Rs 1.5 crores in a plantation spread over four acres in the reserve forests of Maleeswaram peak of Murugala area in Attappadi Reserve Forest. The Commissionerate also opened a help centre for taxpayers at the Malabar Chamber of Commerce and a control room that functions round the clock to coordinate the working of its offices.
