KOZHIKODE: Forest Minister A. Sujanapal stressed the need for proper planning for environmental protection at the level of local bodies while inaugurating a training programme on watershed development in the Western Ghats organised by the Kerala Soil Survey Organisation here on Saturday.
Overexploitation
The Minister pointed out that though the State was rich in biodiversity, because of overexploitation of its resources it was fast turning into a "Devil's Own Country." Pointing out that laws framed for protection of nature had turned out to be ineffective, the Minister said what experience had shown was that without people's active intervention laws would not be effective. Binoy Biswam, MLA, presided. T.P. Ramakrishnan, MLA; Additional Director-Soil Survey P.N. Premachandran, Deputy Director-Agriculture K. Mathew and District Planning Officer Ajaykumar Menoth spoke.
