Plea to bar Bush visit to India

Special Correspondent

He has violated war laws, says jury of "people's court"

  • Holds him responsible for bombing civilian populations
  • No one speak in favour of Bush
  • Several petitioners present arguments

HYDERABAD: A "people's court" organised by the Forum Against the Visit of George Bush here on Sunday urged the Central Government to "bar" US President George W. Bush from visiting the country this week.

The three-member jury of the court headed by retired High Court Judge B.S.A. Swamy held that Mr. Bush had violated laws of war by bombing civilian populations and using chemical weapons.

The Bush administration was attempting to establish its military might all over the world in the name of fighting terrorism. Its nuclear agenda created a sense of insecurity in the world.

And its market expansion programme across countries eroded their sovereignty.

The panel with Prof. G. Haragopal and Prof. Rama Melkote as two other members heard the arguments presented by several petitioners.

No one spoke in favour of Bush. The Forum decided to organise a procession from Indira Park to Bagh Lingampally on March 3 when Bush would be in city.

    Exploited classes

Balladeer Gadar, told the jury that the President's visit was organised as part of a strategy to crush the armed struggles of economically, socially and culturally exploited classes in the country.
