Farmers get Rs.2.66 crore

Labour Minister declares open Rural Youth Sports Meet

TIRUCHI: Financial assistance to the tune of Rs.2.66 crore had been disbursed to 10,500 beneficiaries in the district under the recently announced `Uzhavar Padhugappu Thittam,' the Labour Minister P. Annavi said here today.

The Minister said this while declaring the Rural Youth Sports Meet open at Thathaiengarpet and Balasamuthiram in Thottiyam panchayat union in the district. The main objective of organising the sports meet in all the 385 panchayat unions in the State was to motivate the villagers, especially the youth, and enable them have a good frame of mind by participating in competitions, he said. To encourage the participants, they will be given a T-shirt, cap and tiffin box free of cost during the two-day meet.

The government had recently organised block-level exhibitions to make people aware of activities undertaken by various government departments, besides disseminating information on welfare schemes being implemented by them, he said.

Later, he distributed cheques, amounting to Rs.7.53 lakh to 292 beneficiaries under `Uzhavar Padugappu Thittam.'

He also inaugurated a bus route from Thottiyam to Erumappatti via Ezhurpatti and a medical camp at N. Karuppampatti in Thathaiengarpet union.

Presiding over the function, the Collector, K. Nanda Kishore, said the sports meets evoked a good response from rural youths.

The Managing Director, Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation, Kumbakonam Division, S. Kothandapani, the General Manager, TNSTC, Tiruchi region, K. Moorthy, District Sports Officer, S. Paneerselvam, officials from various departments and local body representatives participated.
