NEW DELHI: The Delhi Cabinet on Monday gave the go ahead to the construction of a new Signature Bridge over the Yamuna river at Wazirabad which would be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs. 464 crore. At a meeting held under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, the Cabinet also approved new guidelines for MLA Local Area Development Scheme. Following the meeting, Ms Dikshit said there is while briefing the media, said the new bridge is proposed down stream the existing bridge-cum-barrage at Wazirabad and will connect NH-1 (Road No.50) on western bank and Wazirabad Road (Road No.59) on the eastern bank of the Yamuna. Stating that there is a pressing demand for additional east-west corridors over the river due to tremendous increase in population in the Trans-Yamuna Area, Ms. Dikshit said the proposed east-west corridor will cater to the needs of commuters from Yamuna Vihar, Gokul Puri, Nand Nagri and inter-state traffic from Ghaziabad and Sahibabad on the eastern side. The Signature Bridge is the first of its kind in Delhi and will have a nearly 175-metre-high bow-shaped pylon with cable stays on one side and back stays on the other side. The total length of the proposed bridge, along with the approach spans, would be about 575 metres. The pylon will have two-level viewing galleries and deck at top with a provision of two lifts for carrying tourists. The new bridge would also have pedestrian sub-ways and footpath and lower level road. Ms Dikshit said the Delhi Tourism and Transport Development Corporation, which would construct the bridge in 42 months.
