NEW DELHI: Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat on Monday inaugurated the new Brahmaputra multi-storey housing complex for Rajya Sabha members.

Speaking on the occasion he observed that the housing complex "symbolises the unity in diversity of India as members hailing from different parts of the country will reside here together".

Mr. Shekhawat expressed confidence that members staying in these beautiful and comfortable houses would come to Parliament in a cheerful mood and raise the problems facing the country in a more effective manner. "This will definitely send a positive message to the people of the country. We should take up and discuss the national issues in a cordial manner following the approach of consensus," said the Vice-President.

Appreciating the efforts of the Chairman of the House Committee of Rajya Sabha, Central Public Works Department and all those involved in the project, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who was the chief guest, said that they had done an exceedingly good job by constructing such houses equipped with all modern facilities.

Union Urban Development Minister Jaipal Reddy said the Brahmaputra housing complex was the first of the three complexes that have been planned for Members of Parliament. He said the two housing complexes would be constructed for the Lok Sabha Members and expressed confidence that they would definitely ease the pressure of housing.

The complex consists of 26 four bedroom flats equipped with energy saving and water harvesting devices built in an area of 1,240 square metres.
