Staff Reporter

one lakh air services handled at the airport

NEDUMBASSERY: The Cochin International Airport Ltd. (CIAL) achieved another major feat with the total number of flight services through the airport surpassing the one-lakh mark.

The airport reached the landmark figure with the operation of Air-India flight, AI 690, bound for Mumbai on Sunday morning, by which time it had 50,000 arrivals and an equal number of departures to its credit.

The Cochin International Airport, the first greenfield airport in the country, was formally inaugurated by the President of India on May 25, 1999. The airport turned operational on June 10 when an international flight of Air-India took off from the Cochin International Airport. Domestic sector operations were shifted here from the Naval airport on July 1, 1999.

The airport currently operates 224 services in a week, including both domestic and international services. About 3,000-3,500 international passengers pass through the airport daily while the number of domestic passengers is between 1,800-2,200 a day.

Aircraft movement through the airport has registered steady growth since it started functioning. During the 10-month period of the current fiscal, growth in aircraft movement in the international sector had registered a growth of 13.29 per cent with the total aircraft movement increasing to 9,526 from 8,408 for the corresponding period during the last fiscal. During the same period the growth in domestic flight movement was 8.43 per cent, with the services increasing from 6,972 to 7,560 compared to last fiscal. Apart from the public sector Air-India, Air-India Express and Indian, there are nine private international carriers operating through the airport — Silk Air, Qatar Airways, Mahan Air, Emirates Airlines, Kuwait Airways, Saudi Arabian Airlines, Oman Air, Gulf Air and Srilankan Airlines. Six domestic carriers operate through the airport; Indian, Jet Airways, Air Sahara, Air Deccan, Kingfisher Airlines and Go Air.
